Antiseptic – thoroughly clean and free of disease-causing organisms
Arsenal – all the weapons and equipment that a country has
Barroom – a room or establishment where alcoholic drinks are served over a counter
Berserk – ancient Norse warrior legendary for frenzy before a battle
Bigot – a prejudiced person who is intolerant of differing opinions
Blasphemy – profane language
Bramble – any of various rough thorny shrubs or vines
Catacomb – an underground tunnel with recesses where bodies were buried
Chintz – a brightly printed and glazed cotton fabric
Conglomeration – a sum total of many heterogeneous things taken together
Desolate – providing no shelter or sustenance
Excursion – a journey taken for pleasure
Garnish – decorate, as with parsley or other ornamental foods
Grotto – a small cave, usually with attractive features
Harlequin – a clown or buffoon
Impassive – having or revealing little emotion or sensibility
Imperceptible – impossible or difficult to sense
Impertinently – in an impudent or impertinent manner
Jackstones – game equipment consisting of one of several small six-pointed metal pieces that are picked up while bouncing a ball in the game of jacks
Jauntily – in a jaunty fashionable manner
Labial – of or relating to the lips of the mouth
Ladyfinger – small finger-shaped sponge cake
Leery – openly distrustful and unwilling to confide
Mortar – a vessel in which substances can be ground with a pestle
Niche – a small concavity
Obelisk – a stone pillar tapering towards a pyramidal top
Offal – viscera and trimmings of a butchered animal
Pylon – a large steel tower supporting high-tension power lines
Quarry – animal hunted or caught for food
Ruminate – reflect deeply on a subject
Tributary – a branch that flows into the mainstream
Trilling – United States literary critic (1905-1975)
Tumult – a state of commotion and noise and confusion
Tumultuous – characterized by unrest or disorder or insubordination
Valise – a small overnight bag for short trips
Hieroglyph – a writing system using picture symbols
