Consternation – fear resulting from the awareness of danger
Feverish – having or affected by an abnormally high body temperature
Didactic – instructive, especially excessively
Patriarch – the male head of family or tribe
Swamp – low land that is seasonally flooded
Hammock – a hanging bed of canvas or rope netting
Clairvoyance – apparent power to perceive things not present to the senses
Delirious – experiencing hallucinations
Alleviate – provide physical relief, as from pain
Chastity – abstaining from sexual relations
Frolic – play boisterously
Iguana – large tropical American arboreal lizard with a spiny crest
Varicose – abnormally swollen or knotty
Languid – lacking spirit or liveliness
Delusion – a mistaken or unfounded opinion or idea
Exodus – a journey by a group to escape from a hostile environment
Rancor – a feeling of deep and bitter anger and ill-will
Stoicism – an indifference to pleasure or pain
Artifice – a deceptive maneuver, especially to avoid capture
Feign – make believe with the intent to deceive
Corset – a woman’s close-fitting foundation garment
Lugubrious – excessively mournful
Seraphic – having a sweet nature befitting an angel
Imminent – close in time; about to occur
Pervert – corrupt morally or by intemperance or sensuality
Concupiscent – vigorously passionate
Perversion – the action of corrupting something
Lament – a cry of sorrow and grief
Pernicious – exceedingly harmful
Hieroglyphic – a writing system using picture symbols
Decrepit – worn and broken down by hard use
Repudiate – refuse to acknowledge, ratify, or recognize as valid
Daguerreotype – a photograph made by an early photographic process
Despotism – dominance through threat of punishment and violence
Apprentice – someone who works for an expert to learn a trade
Temerity – fearless daring
Delirium – a usually brief state of excitement and mental confusion
Vagary – an unexpected and inexplicable change in something
Impertinence – the trait of being rude and inclined to take liberties
Concubine – a woman who cohabits with an important man
